Development of the medical devices industry in Mauritius

 

The global medical industry was valued at more than USD 500 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow further to USD 700 billion by 2030. The largest market for medical devices is the US (46.6%), followed by Europe (26.4%).

Today, there are an estimated 2 million different kinds of medical devices on the world market, categorized into more than 7000 generic medical devices groups.

There are currently 6 major medical devices manufacturing companies operating in Mauritius employing a total of 1155 employees. The products manufactured include the following:

  1. Needles, catheters, cannulae
  2. Instruments and apparatus for medical/surgical sciences
  3. Ophthalmic instruments and appliances
  4. Cardiovascular and oncology implants

Total exports of medical devices amounted to MUR 2.15 billion in 2023, demonstrating a robust growth of over 45% over the last 3 years, compared to MUR 1.29 billion in 2020. This performance reflects a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16% over the last five years. The major export markets for these medical devices continue to be France, India and the United States.

The medical devices sector in Mauritius has experienced continuous development over the last decade, achieving a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.5% in USD terms over the past five years. This dynamic landscape is marked by the expansion of the medical devices manufacturing companies l in Mauritius, as they not only increase their production capacities but also diversify into new product ranges.. Additionally, the Economic Development Board is currently facilitating 2 new medical devices manufacturing projects, further bolstering the sector’s growth and innovation.
