The healthcare sector in Mauritius has undergone significant development, establishing itself as a vibrant ecosystem for both local and international players. This growth has positioned Mauritius as an attractive destination to obtain healthcare and life sciences services.
As part of its mandate, the Economic Development Board (EDB) is leading a mission to Kenya from 21st to 24th November 2023 to promote this sector as well as to establish a network and an integrated healthcare ecosystem among countries in the region.
On November 21, 2023, stakeholders in the pharmaceutical, medical device, healthcare, and life sciences sectors of Kenya and Mauritius will gather for a business forum at the Prideinn Azure Hotel, Lantana Road, Westlands. The delegation will also hold several business-to-business meetings at the PrideInn hotel on November 22 and on November 23 and 24, the team will be visiting associations, universities, and both public and private hospitals.
Mauritius offers several attractive features that make it an ideal choice for healthcare service providers looking to expand their operations. Firstly, it boasts a pro-business environment that encourages investment and supports the growth of the sector. The government has implemented policies to facilitate business setup and operation, making it easier for companies to establish a presence in Mauritius.
The country aspires to establish itself as the region’s medical center, offering a broad spectrum of medical care for a variety of illnesses to both local and international patients. The construction of a new cancer hospital and the availability of specialized care in cardiology, orthopedics, cosmetic surgery, and reproductive medicine, among other specializations, render Mauritius a desirable medical tourism destination. Furthermore the EDB is currently facilitating the setting up of six private healthcare institutions, with a projected investment of MUR 7 billion and the potential to create over 1500 jobs over the next three years.
One of the key strategies employed by EDB Mauritius is to partner with associations and institutions in view to create a regional value chain. By collaborating with relevant stakeholders, the aim is to ensure that each patient obtains the best treatment at the right time at the right cost.
By promoting medical tourism, EDB Mauritius not only seeks to boost the economy but also contributes towards improving access to quality healthcare for patients across the region. This initiative aligns with their vision of positioning Mauritius as a hub for medical excellence within Africa.
Mauritius’ proximity to Africa is another advantageous factor for healthcare service providers considering expansion into the region. Being strategically located within proximity to African countries allows easy access to potential markets and facilitates collaboration with local partners.
In summary, EDB Mauritius is advocating for the export of healthcare and life sciences services from Mauritius to Kenya. With its evolved healthcare sector offering attractive features such as a pro-business environment, robust infrastructure, qualified medical staff, and geographical advantage, Mauritius presents an enticing opportunity for companies seeking expansion of business opportunities in the Healthcare and Biotech industry.
