Through sustained promotional initiatives including those spearheaded by EDB, particularly targeting the Sub-Saharan region, Europe and the USA, the industry has maintained a strong presence in key markets. In 2023, exports of Mauritian denim totalled USD 155 million, showcasing the growing significance of denim products in our exports of textile and apparel.

‘Denim made with care’ is more than a trend. It symbolises a profound ethos as contemporary consumers become increasingly conscious to the environmental and social impacts of their purchases. Mauritian denim manufacturers are at the forefront, championing practices that prioritise care and wellbeing for both people and the planet.

Sustainable Sourcing

Mauritian denim manufacturers are committed to sourcing environment friendly raw materials responsibly. This includes using organic cotton, which is grown without harmful pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, reducing the environmental footprint from the very beginning of the supply chain. Additionally, some manufacturers are exploring the use of recycled cotton, giving new life to textile waste and minimizing the need for virgin resources.

Eco-friendly Dyeing and Finishing

Traditional denim dyeing processes are water-intensive and polluting. However, innovative technologies adopted by Mauritian companies are revolutionising this aspect. Water-saving techniques such as laser and ozone treatments, along with natural and non-toxic dyes, significantly reduce water usage and chemical discharge. This not only protects local water sources but also ensures a safer working environment for factory employees.

Compliance with Global Standards

Mauritian denim manufacturers adhere to various international compliance standards such as WRAP, OEKOTEX, REACH, HIGG Index, Blue Sign, and Vegan Friendly**. These certifications ensure that the products meet stringent criteria for environmental and social responsibility, giving consumers confidence in their sustainable choices.

Highly Innovative Production Facilities

The denim production facilities in Mauritius are equipped with the latest technology for both wet and dry processes. Innovations such as laser, ozone, and e-flow are utilized to minimize the chemical, energy, and water impact on the environment. These advanced techniques not only improve efficiency but also enhance the quality of the final product. Additionally, the facilities ensure green purchasing by adhering to the Green Procurement Instructions, a protocol designed to promote sustainable buying practices.

Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

Embracing renewable energy sources, like solar and wind power, is becoming a hallmark of the Mauritian textile industry. Factories are increasingly investing in energy-efficient machinery and practices, reducing their carbon footprint. By integrating renewable energy into their operations, these companies are contributing to the island's broader sustainability goals and setting an example for others to follow.

Ethical Labour Practices

Beyond environmental considerations, the social aspect of sustainability is equally important. Mauritian denim manufacturers adhere to stringent labour standards, ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and opportunities for skill development. This commitment not only enhances the quality of life for workers but also fosters a loyal and skilled workforce that drives the industry's success.

Waste Reduction and Circular Economy

Zero-waste initiatives are gaining momentum within the denim sector. By implementing practices such as fabric offcut recycling, upcycling old garments, and designing for durability and longevity, manufacturers are moving towards a circular economy model. This approach not only reduces waste but also creates value from what would otherwise be discarded.

The national budget 2024/2025 places a significant emphasis on renewable energy and sustainability, underscoring the pivotal role of the EDB in driving initiatives for industries to embrace a more pronounced ESG culture. This approach aligns with international commitments on climate change, the EU Green Deal, and the forthcoming EU textile regulation. By aligning with these international frameworks, Mauritius is positioning itself in sustainable textile manufacturing, capable of meeting the evolving demands of conscious consumers worldwide.
